The Black Watch Battalion Army Cadet Force Pipes & Drums is based at the TA & Army Cadet Force Training Centre, Baltimore Road, Glenrothes. This is very close to the Regional Police Headquarters, for those who may need to get their bearings.

We are primarily an Army Cadet detachment and as such parade in uniform when required, but our empahisis is on piping and drumming instruction for anyone of cadet age (12 - 18 years) who has an interest in either discipline, including tenor and/ or bass drum and drum major. Through the Pipes & Drums role within the ACF, members can develop leadership skills, confidence in themselves as well as a sense of teamwork and the development of citizenship skills, which can lead to recognition in the form of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, plus a sense of responsibilty that can be rewarded with promotion within the band. Pipes & Drums cadets are also encouraged to develop a sense of commitment to practice and playing engagements/ training, once up to standard, but this would apply to any pipe band if it is to flourish.

Recruits must attain the ACF's 1 star proficiency test, to ensure that each member of the pipes & drums is compitent with basic drill, dress, rifle handling and first aid, among other necessary disciplines, all of which will be used throughout their cadet career, before they can concentrate solely on their instrument if they so wish, though development of military skills is also possible if desired. Opportunities also arise for Pipes & Drums members to participate in more usual cadet activities from time to time.

To higlight one instance in 2005, the band members were part of the massed pipes & drums playing for the 6 Nations Rugby tournament when the matches came to Murrayfield Stadium. This is one of the highlights of the year for us, as opportunities such as these do not come along too often in a pipers' or drummers' career. Recent highlights include playing at Balmoral Castle for part of the Cadet 150 celebrations, in front of none other than Her Majesty The Queen, The Duke Of Edinburgh and Prince Andrew, to name drop just a few of the assembled audience.
